Description

Ja [James] Greenshields to unnamed peer [?Henry St John, viscount Bolingbroke, secretary of state]: have suffered much at hands of Scottish Presbyterians, who imprisoned me for seven months only for reading English service to queen's English servants in Edinburgh, and was relieved upon appeal to the house of lords. Am willing to be provided for in that church, where I already have been a minister for 16 years. queen has renewed her promise upon application of earl of Mar and other friends, and said that she would order you to recommend me to lord lieutenant. Endorsed: recommend him in next letter to [Charles Talbot, duke of] Shrewsbury [lord lieutenant]. Dated at Windsor. ff. 74-75
