Description

Sir J [John] Stanley [chief secretary] to Bolingbroke: encloses votes of lords and commons [SP 63/369 ff. 59-61]. Describes lords' attempt to see privy council books relating to election of Dublin mayor. Lengthy account of commons debates on Phipps. Committee reported that noli prosequi had been obtained in favour of [Edward] Lloyd, scurrilous news-writer, ordered by Council to be prosecuted for publicly getting subscriptions to print the treasonable Memoirs of the Chevalier St George. Also debated report on Mr [Dudley] Moor for speaking a prologue of Dr [Samuel] Garth's at the Playhouse on King William's birthday, 1712. Votes condemned Memoirs. Fourth resolution carried 'against us'. Fifth resolution about influencing jury carried. Debate of fourth resolution very long, turning into attack on his government. Sixth question put was for address to queen to remove Phipps, which his friends would not divide upon for fear of further desertion. Dated at Dublin. ff. 47-50
