2 letters (A Latimer and J Hall, Visiting Magistrates [for Gloucester County Gaol]) on behalf of Edmund Smith, convicted at the Gloucestershire Quarter Sessions in July 1838, for horse stealing on 20 April 1838, property of his father-in-law. There are also certificates from J P Welsh, Surgeon, and Thomas Hicks, Surgeon, stating the prisoner is not insane at present, dated March 1838. Also a certificate from Thomas Cox Buchanan and Thomas Hicks, Surgeons stating prisoner is insane dated August 1839. Grounds for clemency in first letter: case has been discussed with Mr Hitch, Manager of Gloucester County Lunatic Asylum as prisoner has been there before and he was violently insane then but not sure now. Grounds for clemency in second letter: insane. Initial sentence: insane. Annotated: nil, 23 March 1839; ordered to Lunatic Asylum, 22 August 1839. MZ33
