3 individual petitions (Lord Skelmersdale, Captain McDonald and Charles Jones, optician and prosecutor) and 1 collective petition (12 people from Penzance, Cornwall) on behalf of John Julian, ship chief mate, convicted at Liverpool Sessions in January 1830 for stealing a quadrant, property of Charles Jones. Grounds for clemency: from respectable family in Cornwall, good conduct in prison, Baptist minister in Liverpool confirmed his good character, Captain McDonald willing to employ him again as first officer, been an excellent and trustworthy chief mate on board his ship The Good Intent, only committed crime to obtain money to buy food for wife and children because could not find work, only pawned quadrant for 18s which shows his desperation, prosecutor thinks sentence too severe. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Annotated: to be sent to penitentiary where if he behaves well he will be recommended before expiry of his time, answered 8 May 1832. NO 6
