2 individual petitions (Charlton Byam Wollaston, visiting magistrate) and 1 collective petition (H Everingham, surgeon, and Christopher Arden, surgeon to Dorchester Gaol) on behalf of George James convicted at Dorchester Spring Assizes in 1826 for shooting and maiming James Sansom. There is a letter from Robert Moore stating no objection from anyone in the village to prisoner returning home especially since victim now dead and certificates from the surgeon to Dorchester Gaol confirm the prisoner's sanity. There is a testimonial from Thomas Shuttle as to prisoner's good character before his accident. Grounds for clemency: medical opinion states he is now quite sane, no risk to return to live in village again, wife and family willing to have him home to look after, nearly 60 years old, quiet and orderly behaviour in prison, never transferred to lunatic asylum, only committed offence after accident when fall from cart gave him concussion, fully recovered now, never under influence of alcohol. Initial sentence: acquitted on grounds of insanity. Annotated: pencil notes by Robert Peel, warrant of discharge prepared 3 February 1830. NO 1
