The Records Branch of the Newcastle Central Office formed part of Division A, and maintained a separate ledger account for every insured contributor, with details of all contributions paid by or in respect of him or her. The branch provided an information service to the ministry's local and regional offices on the state of any account and the consequential level of entitlement to benefit.
From 1961, when graduated national insurance contributions were introduced, computerised methods of recording them were instituted, while traditional clerical records continued for the flat rate contributions. In 1975 when national insurance contributions became wholly earnings related, clerical methods made way entirely for the use of computerised means.
