The National Insurance Advisory Committee was appointed on 28 October 1947 under s.41(1) of the National Insurance Act 1946 to give advice and assistance to the Minister in connection with the discharge of his functions under the Act. Those functions were to safeguard the insurance rights of old scheme contributors transferred to the new scheme and to provide for people who were to be insured for the first time, including the self employed.
Members of the committee examined and reported on preliminary draft regulations, and considered special questions involving difficult problems of insurance on which the minister would seek their advice.
The committee was superseded by the Social Security Advisory Committee in November 1980.
