Automatic Data Processing and Machines Division, in its various guises, was originally created to support the work of automating the social security system, including the issue of computer-generated payments of recipients of social security benefits. Information concerning the Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance and its successors response to the technical development of computer hardware and software can be traced in the files of this division along with the implementation and operation of an immense live database. As public awareness of computing increased and the technology improved, the computer policy aspects of the work were gradually subsumed into management support divisions.
