The collection of detailed statistics commenced from 1 January 1949 and are collected and processed for the statistical year relating to the particular benefit.
Statistics are provided for a variety of needs. The Government Actuary and other government departments require statistics to complement their own researches and in the production of estimates. Statistics are also provided in answers to Parliamentary Questions.
The supply of statistics is not confined to government departments and requests are made by individuals, public bodies and business firms.
