The benefits relate to payments in respect of interruption of employment by reason of unemployment, sickness, confinements, widowhood and orphans, old age and death grants.
Also included are papers relating to matters of interpretation covering the payment of National Insurance contributions by aliens working in the United Kingdom. The International Labour Organization is one of the international organisations whose papers appear in this series.
The majority of files in this series concern policy. The RA series (Reciprocal Agreements) refers to non-EEC countries and the EEC series to countries in the European Economic Community. The balance are Reciprocal Agreements Case files (RA(X) series) for reciprocal agreements with non-EEC countries.
For files on costs under the social security scheme for migrant workers, and the possible implications of entry into the EEC on all aspects of the medical professions see MH 142

Upon the creation of the Ministry of Social Security in 1968, the branches responsible for reciprocal agreements between overseas countries and related pension policies on overseas matters were transferred from Insurance Department C to Insurance Department A.
In 1971, the responsible branches were reformed into the International Relations Division, which was later transferred to the Administration and Social Security Policy Group. In 1986 its status as a Division was downgraded to Branch level, and responsibilities for overseas matters (social security) were transferred to other areas of the department.
