Medical and surgical journal of HMS Scout for 3 January to 20 June 1838 by R. Henderson Brown, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed on the Cape of Good Hope and African Station.

[Note: ADM 101/120/1, 1A-1B are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/120/1].

Folios 1-3: Copy of daily sick book.

Folio 3: Benjamin Grace, aged 24, seaman; case number 1; disease or hurt, fractura ulni. Put on sick list, 3 January 1838 at sea on the West Coast of Africa. Discharged 3 January 1838 invalided.

Folios 3-5: William Dixon, aged 24, able seaman; case number 2; disease or hurt, concussio et lesio cerebri, fractura cranni. Put on sick list, 13 January 1838 at Accra, West Coast of Africa. Discharged 16 February 1838 invalided.

Folio 6: Thomas Robertson, aged 30, seaman; case number 3; disease or hurt, synochus. Put on sick list, 26 January 1838 at Prince’s Island, West Coast of Africa. Discharged 3 February 1838 to duty.

Folio 6: Henry Foss, aged 45, boatswain’s mate; case number 4; disease or hurt, rheumatismus. Put on sick list, 7 February 1838 at sea, Bight of Benin. Discharged 14 February 1838 to duty.

Folio 7: John Scott, aged 42, seaman; case number 5; disease or hurt, hernia humoralis. Put on sick list, 24 February 1838 at sea, Bight of Biafra. Discharged 19 June 1838 invalided.

Folio 7: Thomas Westfoot, aged 18, boy; case number 6; disease or hurt, ephemera. Put on sick list, 5 March 1838 at anchor off the old calebar river, Bight of Biafra. Discharged 16 March 1838 to duty.

Folios 7-8: Jim Nogo ‘liberated African boy’; case number 7; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 20 March 1838 at sea, Bight of Biafra. Discharged 27 March 1838 to duty.

Folios 8-9: John Brown, aged 30, seaman; case number 8; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 21 March 1838 at sea, Bight of Biafra. Discharged 11 April 1838 to duty.

Folio 9: Robert Moore, aged 28, seaman; case number 9; disease or hurt, colica. Put on sick list, 24 March 1838 at Prince’s Island, West Coast of Africa. Discharged 6 April 1838 to duty.

Folios 9-10: Assam ‘a Chinese Commander’s cook’; case number 10; disease or hurt, colica. Put on sick list, 6 April 1838 at sea of Bight of Biafra. Discharged 26 April 1838 to duty.

Folios 10-13: Mark G. Noble; case number 11; disease or hurt, rheumatismus. Put on sick list, 24 April 1838 at Accra, West Coast of Africa. Died 18 May 1838 at sea. Includes details of post mortem.
