Description

Medical journal of the Castle Ellen, convict ship from 9 November 1855 to 26 March 1856 by John Wilson Elliott, Surgeon Superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in the conveying of convicts to Bermuda. [Note: ADM 101/254, 1A-1H are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/254].

Folio 1: Front cover of the journal.

Folios 2-4: Copy of sick list.

Folio 5: Blank.

Folios 6-7: case no. 1, Mr C H Bindon, aged 16, Ensign 26th Regiment; sick or hurt, orchitis, he was embarked as second in command of the guard, suffered from inflamed testicle of the right side; put on sick list, 21 November 1855, discharged 9 December 1855 to duty.

Folios 7-8: case no 2, James Surrige, aged 16, Convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, conjunctivitis; put on sick list, 12 December 1855, sent 22 January 1856 to Colonial Hospital at Bermuda.

Folio 8: case no 3, Josiah Brown, aged 26, Convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, febris with general febrile symptoms preceded by rigors and cold chills; put on sick list, 17 December 1855, discharged 22 December 1855 well.

Folio 9: case no 4, Peter McBride, aged 18, Private 26th Regiment; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, mumps, was attacked by slight febrile symptoms, pain and swelling under the angle of right jaw; put on sick list, 28 December 1855, discharged 6 January 1856 to duty.

Folios 9-10: case no 5, James Arnold, aged 29, Private 26th Regiment; sick or hurt, palsy; put on sick list, 14 January 1856, sent 23 January 1856 to Military Hospital at Bermuda.

Folios 10-11: case no 6, Daniel Barns, aged 35, Convict; sick or hurt, hemoptysis; put on sick list, 7 February 1856, discharged 16 February 1856 well.

Folios 12-15: Blank.

Folios 16-18: Nosological return of cases mentioned in the journal, and tables of medical statistics.

Folio 18: Surgeon's general remarks. On 22 November embarked on board 35 rank and file of the 26th Regiment as a guard, and on 24 November embarked 100 convicts from the hulks. On 29 November the ship arrived at Spithead and received 90 prisoners from Portsmouth Prison, on 1 December 140 from Portland and on 6 December 16 from Dartmoor, making a total of 346 all in apparent sound health. Also includes Surgeon's remarks on cases admitted into the sick list during the voyage. Signed: John Wilson Elliott, Surgeon Superintendent.
