Folios 14-15: Surgeon's general remarks. The ship was commissioned at Devonport early in August 1853, with a compliment of eighty officers and men. After fitting out, the ship sailed from Falmouth on 24 September for the West Coast of Africa, touched at Madeira and arrived at Sierra Leone on the 3 November, thence to Cape Coast Castle, Lagos, Fernando Po and on the 6 January 1854 anchored at St Pauls Loando where the ship remained for nine days refitting. From Loando the ship cruized and touching at Ambroz and Kabenda and the river Congo. The ship returned to Loando on the 14 March 1854, two deaths occurred during this period - William Yeo, Boy, 2nd Class, who fell over board and was drowned at sea on 5 October 1853, and Mr. William C Brown, Paymaster, who was found dead in his cabin on 2 December 1853.
