Description

Medical and surgical journal of His Majesty's ship Kite for 26 April 1802 to 27 April 1803 by Alexander Dewar, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in the North Sea and Channel Service.

[Note: ADM 101/105/7, 7A, 7B and 7C are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/105/7].

Folio 1: Blank.

Folios 2-3: William Wray, aged 24, seaman; disease or hurt, severe pain in the left knee. Put on sick list, 3 June 1802, at Sheerness. Discharged 23 June 1802 to hospital.

Folios 3-4: John Bambridge, aged 21, marine; disease or hurt, complains of constant pain under the sternum sometimes shooting to the right side, attended with a frequent short cough and scanty expectoration. Put on sick list, 9 September 1802. Discharged 10 October 1802 to the hospital.

Folios 4-5: John Gorton, aged 22, marine; disease or hurt, both thighs, left leg and right arm severely scalded by a kettle of boiling water being upset over him by accident. Put on sick list, 25 October 1802, Leith. Discharged 28 November 1802.

Folios 5-7: John Smith, aged 27, seaman; disease or hurt, frequent purging attended with tenesmus and griping. Put on sick list, 2 November 1802, at sea. Discharged 8 December 1802 to hospital.

Folio 7: Alexander Black, aged 21, master’s mate; disease or hurt, attacked with pain and stiffness in both extremities, particularly severe in the lower and the body of the right tibia was likewise affected with pain. Put on sick list, 30 November 1802, Sheerness. Discharged 30 November 1802 to hospital.

Folios 7-8: Edward Thomas, aged 24, seaman; disease or hurt, the shoulder and elbow joints of the right arm are affected with considerable swelling and severe pain much increased on every attempt to move them. The inferior extremities are also affected with pain but no swelling. Over the whole body there are many eruptions which began in the form of small white postules which breaking join together and a crust. These falling leave the parts beneath slightly ulcerated and inflamed. Put on sick list, 30 November 1802, Sheerness. Discharged 30 November 1802 to hospital.

Folio 8: John Allen, aged 27, seaman; disease or hurt, acute pain in left side above the middle of the seventh rib much aggravated on inspiration and by a frequent short cough. Put on sick list, 8 December 1802, Sheerness. Discharged 8 December 1802.

Folios 8-11: Dennis Cawley, aged 32, supernumerary; disease or hurt, headache, pain of back and limbs, general weakness and uneasiness, inclination to vomit, loss of appetite with frequent purging, pain around the umbilicus and tenesmus. Put on sick list, 1 January 1803, Deptford. Discharged 12 January 1803 to hospital.

Folios 8-11: Pat Kelly, aged 22, supernumerary; disease or hurt, headache, and heaviness over eyes, nausea and frequent inclination to vomit, pains in all of his limbs and universal debility and uneasiness, frequent purging and griping. Put on sick list, 22 January 1803, off Gravesend. Discharged 12 January 1803 to hospital.

Folios 9-11: John Selby, aged 22, supernumerary; disease or hurt, headache, and pain in the back, and universal uneasiness and restlessness, bad taste in mouth, nausea and inclination to vomit. Put on sick list, 14 January 1803, in the Thames. Discharged 12 January 1803 to hospital.
