Description

Medical and surgical journal of His Majesty's ship Kite for 31 May 1801 to 26 April 1802 by Alexander Dewar, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in the North Seas. (Described at

[Note: ADM 101/105/7, 7A, 7B and 7C are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/105/7].

Folio 1: Blank.

Folios 2-3: William Thomas, aged 40, seaman; disease or hurt, complains of severe pain under the lower part of the sternum sometimes stretching to the spine and to the left shoulder much aggravated by a frequent short cough, by full inspiration, and by lying on the left side, complains also of headache, pain in his back and urgent thirst. Put on sick list, 19 June 1801 at sea. Discharged 29 June 1801 to duty.

Folio 3: Andrew Calston, aged 33, seaman; disease or hurt, pectoral complaints. Put on sick list, 21 July 1801, Yarmouth. Discharged 2 July 1801 to hospital.

Folios 4-6: Timothy Taylor, aged 23, marine; disease or hurt, on both legs there are a number of livid irregular blotches, not raised above the level of the surrounding skin, attended with considerable pain in the hams and stiffness of the knee joints which are always worst at night. Complains of flying pains in different parts of the body. Put on sick list, 5 September 1801, at sea. Discharged 17 September 1801 to duty.

Folios 4-6: Mr Arrowsmith, aged 23, surgeon's mate; disease or hurt, complains of very frequent cough attended with profuse though difficult expectoration. Difficulty of breathing, pain in his forehead and soreness across the thorax. Put on sick list, 6 September 1801, at sea. Discharged 23 September 1801 to duty.

Folios 6-8: Samuel Eaton, aged 20, seaman; disease or hurt, coming down the rigging he bruised both testicles which are considerably swelled and attended with severe pain. Put on sick list, 29 September 1801, at sea. Discharged 30 October 1801 to duty.

Folios 8-10: Thomas Malloy, aged 20, seaman; disease or hurt, complains of severe pain at the lower part of the tibia of the left leg which is worst at night. Put on sick list, 5 January 1802, Leith. Discharged 9 February 1802 to duty.

Folios 10-11: John Horan, aged 23, corporal of marines; disease or hurt, complains of severe pain around the umbilicus sometimes remitting and returning with great violence he is obliged to keep his body in a stooping posture, the pain being much aggravated by an attempt to put himself erect. Complains also of frequent nausea but no vomiting and anorexia. Put on sick list, 1 March 1802, at sea. Discharged 10 March 1802 to duty.
