Description

Medical journal HMS Ambuscade for 27 January 1802 to 4 September 1802 by J Anderson, during which time the said ship was employed between Weymouth and St Helen's.

Folio 2: Mr Armstrong, aged 18, midshipman; sick or hurt, complains of difficult deglutition, cough, pain of breast, with some [?], headache and nausea which he attributes to getting wet in a boat; put on sick list, 28 May 1802 at Portsmouth, discharged 11 June 1802 to duty.

Folio 2: J Cannon, aged 28, able seaman; sick or hurt, large foul ulcer on the right leg of some weeks standing; put on sick list, 28 May 1802 at Portsmouth, discharged 24 June 1802 to duty.

Folios 2-3: Lieutenant Milne, age [not stated]; sick or hurt, complains of pain of the breast attended with a troublesome cough and hoarseness plus rather quiet [?] heat of skin, body costive; put on sick list, 28 May 1802 at Portsmouth, discharged 13 June 1802 to duty.

Folio 3: J Cuitin, aged 26, ordinary seaman; sick or hurt, [?]; put on sick list, 29 May 1802 at Portsmouth, discharged 18 June 1802 to duty.

Folio 3: J Cannon, aged 36, able seaman; sick or hurt, fell from the main deck into the after hold and bruised his shoulder and loins; put on sick list, 4 June 1802 at Portsmouth, discharged 14 June 1802 to duty.

Folio 3: Daniel Davis, aged 27, able seaman; sick or hurt, a bruise in the right hand produced between a boat and the [?] side; put on sick list, 12 June 1802 at Spithead, discharged 28 June 1802 to duty.

Folios 3-4: L Titus, aged 22, able seaman; sick or hurt, complains of severe pain about the umbilicus, frequent stools mixed with blood; put on sick list, 15 June 1802 at sea, discharged 4 July 1802 to duty.

Folio 4: D Jones, aged 30, able seaman; sick or hurt, [?]; put on sick list, 18 June 1802 at sea, discharged 1 July 1802 to duty.

Folio 4: Richard Price, aged 25, marine; sick or hurt, has several chancres on the glans penis no swelling in his groins; put on sick list, 19 June 1802 at sea, discharged 19 July 1802 to duty.

Folio 4: J Welsh, aged 28, able seaman; sick or hurt, has an enlargement on the lower part of the tibia of the right leg which has been troublesome for some weeks, but is now so painful to prevent him performing his duty; put on sick list, 19 June 1802 at sea, discharged 30 August 1802 to duty.

Folio 4: J Organ, aged 28, able seaman; sick or hurt, complains of severe pains in his knee and hip joints, which he attributes to sleeping on the deck at night; put on sick list, 24 June 1802 at sea, discharged 19 July 1802 to duty.

Folios 4-5: A Bound, aged 27, able seaman; sick or hurt, complains of acute pain in his left breast with [?] and dry cough which he attributes to sleeping on a wet deck; put on sick list, 1 July 1802 at sea, discharged 19 July 1802 to duty.

Folio 5: [Richard?] James, aged 24, marine; sick or hurtcynanche tonsillaris.

Folio 5: Mr Mullen, midshipman; sick or hurt, has an eruption on his legs, thigh and arms which is evidently itch; put on sick list, 8 July 1802 at sea, discharged 19 July 1802 to duty.

Folios 5-6: J Munch, able seaman; sick or hurt, has several ulcers on the glans prepuce penis and a bubo in his left groin; put on sick list, 13 July 1802 at sea, discharged 4 September 1802 to the surgeon's successor.

Folio 6: Samuel Platt, aged 24, able seaman; sick or hurt, intermittent fever; put on sick list, 16 July 1802 at sea, discharged 18 August 1802 to duty.

Folios 6-7: J Lewis, aged 33, able seaman; sick or hurt, catarrh; put on sick list, 19 July 1802 at sea, discharged 4 August 1802 to duty.

Folio 7: Thomas Flanders, aged 28, able seaman; sick or hurt, contusion, when hositing in the cutter, fell from the booms to the main deck, complains of severe pain in his back and loins and a small wound above the right eye brow; put on sick list, 24 July 1802 at sea, discharged 18 August 1802 to duty.

Folio 7: J Oford, aged 23, able seaman; sick or hurt, venereal; put on sick list, 1 August 1802 at sea, discharged 4 September 1802 to the surgeon's successor.

Folio 7: J Clements, aged 27, ordinary seaman; sick or hurt, catarrh; put on sick list, 6 August 1802 at sea, discharged 20 August 1802 to duty.

Folio 7: Mr [McMinrin?], boatswain; sick or hurt, contusion, when in a state of intoxication fell from the forecastle into the waist and bruised his shoulder and loins; put on sick list, 10 August 1802 at sea, discharged [?].

Folio 7: William Cowzons, aged 34, ordinary seaman; sick or hurt, psora; put on sick list, 12 August 1802 at sea, discharged 30 August 1802.
