Description

Medical journal of HMS Albion for 26 July 1806 to 25 July 1807 by Andrew Elphinstone, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in the East Indies.

[Note: ADM 101/82/3, 3A-3L are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/82/3].

Folio 1: Blank.

Folios 2-3: James Bryant, aged 34, seaman; disease or hurt, scurvy. Put on sick list, 15 June 1806 off the Isle of France. Died 10 August 1806.

Folios 4-7: Richard Carradge, aged 47, seaman; disease or hurt, wound to the groin caused by a bull’s goring on board ship. Put on sick list, 17 August 1806 at St Mary's Madagascar. Discharged 12 October 1806.

Folios 7-9: Surgeon's general remarks in regards to an epidemic (bilious) on board ship between the end of October 1806 to end of December 1806.

Folios 9-10: Surgeon's general remarks in regards to an outbreak of scurvy on board ship in January 1807 which at one point reached 154 cases, and 28 cases of dysentery.

Folios 11-15: The following men as part of their treatment against scurvy were treated with sulphuric acid; Charles White, aged 34, seaman (folio 11); George Crawford, aged 24, seaman (folio 12); M. Sherriff, aged 32, Quartermaster (folio 12); James Turton, aged 28, seaman (folio 12); George Wood, aged 44, Landsman (folios 12-13); Thomas Mulvey, aged 55 (folio 13); William Conduit, aged 23 (folio 13); John Pendergrass, aged 35, seaman (folio 13); Charles Young, aged 36, boatswain's mate (folio 14); Juliana Black, aged 38 (folio 14); John Allard, aged 47 (folio 14); John Hunt, aged 23 (folio 14); John Gindley, aged 29, marine (folio 15); John Scott, aged 26, Landsman (folio 15); John Neale (folio 15); Archibald Calwell (folio 15); Edward Cole (folio 15); Thomas Milwood (folio 15); Christian Thomas (folio 15); Samuel Waters (folio 15); Thomas Jones, a marine (folio 15); James Hunt (folio 15); Thomas Griffiths (folio 15); John Lettoff (folio 15); William Phillips (folio 15); Calvin Williams (folio 15); George Huckstable, marine (folio 15); Elias Winterbottom, marine (folio 15); Isaac King (folio 15); Robert Sharp (folio 15). Folios 16-17: The following men as part of their treatment against scurvy were treated with nitric acid; Edmund Welsh, carpenter's crew (folio 16); John Cole (folio 16); James Taylor (folio 16); Edward Arthur, Quartermaster (folio 16); Edward Easton, Quartermaster (folio 16); George Smith (folio 16); John Peters (folio 16); Nicholas Caldter (folio 16).

Folios 17-18: The following men as part of their treatment against scurvy were treated with lime juice; Samuel Charles (folio 17); Charles Lowe (folio 17); Christopher Browne (folio 17); John White (folio 17); James Walker (folio 17); John Shepherd (folio 17); Alexander McMillan (folio 17); John Girdley (folio 17); Samuel Garnett (folio 17); James Thompson (folio 17); James Sampson, marine (folio 17); John Simpson, marine (folio 17); John Murray (folio 18); John Allard (folio 18).

Folios 18-19: The use of the Earth-Bath in the treatment of scurvy.

Folio 20: a numerical abstract of the medical cases mentioned in the journal.
