Description

Medical journal of HMS Albion (of 74 guns, complement of men 590) for 25 July 1805 to 25 July 1806 by Andrew Elphinstone, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in the East Indies.

[Note: ADM 101/82/3, 3A-3L are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/82/3].

Folio 1: James Morrison, aged 33, able seaman; disease or hurt, fracture of the meta-tarsal bone of the great toe and contusion of foot. Put on sick list, 18 June 1805. Discharged 27 October 1805 to duty.

Folio 1: George Miller, aged 20, seaman; disease or hurt, ulcer on the foot. Put on sick list, 3 August 1805 at Acheen Sumatra. Discharged 25 September 1805 to the East India Company's hospital at Prince of Wales's Island.

Folio 1: William Chambers, aged 18, seaman; disease or hurt, ulcer on the ankle. Put on sick list, 8 August 1805 at Sumatra. Discharged 8 August 1805 to hospital.

Folio 1: Samuel Spencer, aged 34, landsman; disease or hurt, ulcer on leg. Put on sick list, 25 August 1805 at Sumatra. Discharged 1 December 1805 to duty.

Folio 1: Daniel Shea, aged 32, landsman; disease or hurt, ulcer on leg. Put on sick list, 25 August 1805 at Sumatra. Discharged 1 December 1805 to duty.

Folio 2: Edward Dutton, aged 31, marine; disease or hurt, ulcer on leg. Put on sick list, 4 September 1805 at Sumatra. Discharged 3 November 1805 to duty.

Folio 2: William Carpenter, aged 13, marine; disease or hurt, ulcer on foot. Put on sick list, 20 September 1805 at sea. Discharged 3 November 1805 to duty.

Folio 2: Benjamin Hockley, aged 23, marine; disease or hurt, ulcer on foot. Put on sick list, 20 September 1805 at sea. Discharged 8 December 1805 to duty.

Folios 2-5: Surgeon's general remarks about the general history, symptoms and cure of ulcers 'the most troublesome complaints on shipboard in the East Indies'. The surgeon also compares the appearance of soldiers and sailors that have served in the East Indies 'the former look puny, sallow and exhausted; while the latter appear ruddy, strong and healthy' (folio 5). This in the opinion of army officers is because 'it is totally impossible to prevent them [soldiers] from repeated drunkenness and to this in a great degree they attribute all the evil which befalls them'.

Folios 5-9: Surgeon's remarks about dysentery.

Folio 9: a numerical abstract of the sick and wounded of HMS Albion for 24 July 1805 to 25 July 1806.
