Description

Medical journal of HMS Albion for 2 January-1 April 1801 by Samuel Allen, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in the North Sea. [Note: ADM 101/82/3, 3A-3L are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/82/3 Folio 1: Blank. Folios 2-9: John Wade, aged about 50, ship's cook; disease or hurt, pneumonic inflammation. Put on sick list, 2 January 1801. Discharged 28 January 1801 to Greenwich Hospital by order of the Admiral. Folios 3-4: William Wallon, aged about 24, supernumerary; disease or hurt, pulse hard and irregular and frequent with [?] prostration of strength and frequent vomiting of bile. Put on sick list, 11 January 1801 at the Great Nore. Discharged 13 January 1801 to the Spanker hospital ship. Folios 5-9: William Bridge, supernumerary; disease or hurt, gonorrhoea with slight dysuria. Put on sick list, 16 January 1801. Discharged 8 February 1802 to duty.

Folios 5-13: Ceasor Sobins, aged about 34, seaman; disease or hurt, lues venerea. Put on sick list, 18 January 1801. Discharged 24 February 1801 to duty.

Folios 7-8: Mr C Carter, Lieutenant; disease or hurt, lues venerea. Put on sick list, 25 January 1801. Discharged 27 January 1801 to Sheerness sick quarters.

Folios 7-8: Mr Moody, midshipman; disease or hurt, lues venerea. Put on sick list, 26 January 1801. Discharged 27 February 1801 to the Spanker hospital ship.

Folio 8: William Wilson, aged about 40, seaman; disease or hurt, venereal eruptions over his body and chancres. Put on sick list, 26 January 1801. Discharged 27 February 1801 to the Spanker hospital ship.

Folios 10-13: Mr Fleming, captain's clerk; disease or hurt, intermittent fevers. Put on sick list, 3 February 1801. Discharged 23 February 1801 to duty.

Folios 13-14: Daniel Manning, aged about 50, boatswain's mate; disease or hurt, chronic rheumatismus. Put on sick list, 27 February 1801. Discharged 18 March 1801 to the Spanker hospital ship.

Folio 14: James Smith, aged about 49, seaman; disease or hurt, contusions of the loins from a fall of the main deck down the fore cockpit ladder. Put on sick list, 15 March 1801. Discharged 18 March 1801 to the Spanker hospital ship.

Folios 15-16: William [Penny?]; disease or hurt, languor and lassitude, frequent chills and heats, oppressed breathing, pale countenance, vertigo and [great?] sensibility of nervous system. Put on sick list, 15 March 1801. Discharged [?].

Folio 17: A numerical abstract of the medical cases mentioned in the journal.
