Description

Medical journal of HMS Albion for 31 May 1798 to 12 April 1799 by William Dingwall, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was mostly employed in the River Thames and at Sheerness. [Note: ADM 101/82/3, 3A-3B are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/82/3].

Folio 1: Blank.

Folio 2: William Duke, aged about 14, boy 3rd class; disease or hurt, alarmed by a profuse spitting of blood, of a florid colour, brought up without coughing, vomiting or any apparent uneasiness. Put on sick list, 15 June 1798 at Deptford. Discharged 16 June 1798 to Deptford sick quarters.

Folios 3-4: Matthew Elliott, aged about 22, marine; disease or hurt, is affected with two large chancres. Put on sick list, 23 July 1798 at Gallions. Discharged 25 August 1798 cured.

Folio 4: John Croft, aged about 50, Greenwich Pensioner; disease or hurt, severe gripes of the bowels, loose stools, and tenesmus. Put on sick list, 3 August 1798 at the Nore. Discharged 8 August 1798 cured.

Folio 5: Joseph Bagley, aged about 22, marine; disease or hurt, considerable discharge from the urethra. Put on sick list, 27 July 1798 at the Gallions. Discharged 17 August 1798 cured.

Folio 5: John Tiffney, aged about 25, marine; disease or hurt, [?]. Put on sick list, 27 July 1798 at the Gallions. Discharged September 1798 cured.

Folio 6: Miles [Rembus], aged about 25, supernumerary; disease or hurt, [ague?]. Put on sick list, 1 August 1798 at the Nores. Discharged 12 August 1798 cured.

Folio 7: Thomas Grant, aged about 25, supernumerary; disease or hurt, dislocated humerous of long standing. Put on sick list, 27 July 1798 at the Gallions. Discharged 29 July 1798 to the Spanker hospital ship.

Folio 7: Francis Graham, aged about 30, supernumerary; disease or hurt, obstructed urine. Put on sick list, 27 July 1798 at the Gallions. Discharged 29 July 1798 to the Spanker hospital ship.

Folio 7: Thomas Allan, aged about 28, supernumerary; disease or hurt, scrolae hernia. Put on sick list, 27 July 1798 at the Gallions. Discharged 29 July 1798 to the Spanker hospital ship.

Folios 7-8: Thomas Cook, aged about 30, boatswain's mate; disease or hurt, in consequence of a large block striking the lower part of the abdomen and scrotum yesterday is affected with a considerable swelling pain and inflammation of the right testicle which also extends in small degree to the left so as to impede his walking except with the greatest difficulty. Also complains of the pain stretching from the testicle to the small of the back and the course of the spermatic cord. Put on sick list, 27 August 1798 at Spithead. Discharged 7 September 1798 cured.
