Description

The medical and surgical journal of HM convict ship Recovery for 4 May to 13 November 1837 by Edward Jeffery, during which time the said ship was employed in a voyage to Van Dieman's Land and New South Wales.

[Note: ADM 101/63/7, 7A-7B are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/63/7].

Folio 1: A nosological synopsis of the sick book kept during the period of this journal.

Folios 2-3: Surgeon’s general remarks. On 17 May 1837, 180 male convicts were embarked in the Recovery at Woolwich and on the 22nd [May 1837], 100 at Chatham. Total number embarked 280 and their general condition and state of health appeared good. The ship sailed from England on 1st June [1837].

Folios 4-5: William Milland, convict, aged 26; case number 1; disease or hurt, catarrh. Put on sick list, 24 May 1837 at Sheerness. Discharged 8 June 1837.

Folios 5-6: George Parker, convict, aged 26; case number 2; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 24 May 1837 at Sheerness. Discharged 12 June 1837.

Folios 6-7: Stephen Palin, convict, aged 30; case number 3; disease or hurt, cynanche tonsillaris. Put on sick list, 28 May 1837 at Sheerness. Discharged 6 June 1837.

Folios 7-8: Edward Gray, private, 80th Regiment, aged 24; case number 4; disease or hurt, syphilis. Put on sick list, 28 May 1837 at Sheerness. Discharged 22 June 1837.

Folios 8-9: [Emanuel?] Karney, convict, aged 24; case number 5; disease or hurt, orchitis. Put on sick list, 2 June 1837 at sea. Discharged 14 June 1837.

Folios 9-10: William Jones, convict, aged 28; case number 6; disease or hurt, hepatitis. Put on sick list, 10 June 1837 at sea. Died 19 June 1837.

Folios 10-11: Daniel Dowdswell, convict, aged 24; case number 7; disease or hurt, rheumatismus. Put on sick list, 19 June 1837 at sea. Discharged 10 July 1837.

Folios 11-13: Robert Seward, convict, aged 36; case number 8; disease or hurt, phthisis. Put on sick list, [?] June 1837 at sea. Died 12 August 1837.

Folios 13-14: John Reeves, convict, aged 28; case number 9; disease or hurt, dysenteria. Put on sick list, 17 July 1837 at sea. Discharged 31 July 1837 to duty.

Folios 14-16: Owen Sweeney, convict, aged 55; case number 10; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 4 August 1837 at sea. Discharged 8 September 1837 to duty.

Folios 16-18: John Hicks, convict, aged 30; case number 11; disease or hurt, dysenteria. Put on sick list, 5 August 1837 at sea. Died 3 September 1837.

Folio 19: William Furness, convict, aged 28; case number 12; disease or hurt, dysenteria. Put on sick list, 11 August 1837 at sea. Died 15 September 1837.

Folios 19-21: William Webb, convict, aged 27; case number 13; disease or hurt, fever. Put on sick list, 26 September 1837 at sea. Died 4 October 1837.

Folios 22-25: Blank.

Folios 26-32: Copy of daily sick book of the male convict ship Recovery from 4 May to 13 November 1837.
