Medical and surgical journal of the Elphinstone, convict ship for 22 July 1838 to 5 January 1839 by Alick Osborne, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in taking convicts to New South Wales.

Folio 1: Instructions to Surgeon Superintendent for the compilation of the sick book and journal.
Folios 1-4: A copy of the daily sick book.
Folios 5-6: case no 1, Thomas Campbell, aged 28, convict; taken ill at sea; disease, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 28 September 1838. Discharged 19 October 1837 cured.
Folios 6-8: case no 2, Patrick Cane, aged 50, convict; taken ill at sea; disease, fever, headache, pain in the back and loins, slight shivering at times and loss of appetite. Put on sick list, 3 October 1838. Discharged 15 October 1837 cured.
Folio 9: case no 3, James McCrete, aged 61, convict; taken ill at sea; disease, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 26 October 1838. Discharged 31 October 1837 cured.
Folios 10-12: case no 4, John Cavanagh, aged 24, convict; taken ill at sea; disease, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 29 October 1838. Discharged 10 November 1837 cured.
Folios 12-13: case no 5, John Higgins, aged 24, convict; taken ill at sea; disease, synocha. Put on sick list, 30 October 1838. Discharged 6 November 1837 cured.
Folios 14-18: Blank.
Folio 19: Nosological synopsis of cases mentioned in the journal.
Folio 20: Surgeon's general remarks. The ship received the convicts in good health at Dublin and sailed at a favourable period of the year. The scorbutic cases were noticed promptly and quickly yielded to the nitre and vinegar and generally administered this remedy to all patients with boils, ulcers, or eruptions with the best effects.
