Medical and surgical journal of the Elphinstone, convict ship for 15 May to 18 October 1837 by Campbell France, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in a voyage to Van Diemen's Land.

Folios 7-8: case no 1, John Costar, aged 42, convict; taken ill at Sheerness; disease, catarrhus. Put on sick list, 24 May 1837. Discharged 4 June 1837 from the Hospital.
Folios 8-9: case no 2, Abraham Lee, aged 21, convict; taken ill at Sheerness; disease, catarrhus. Put on sick list, 27 May 1837. Discharged 19 June 1837 from the Hospital.
Folios 9-10: case no 3, James McGregor, aged 31, convict; taken ill at Sheerness; disease, ulcus, formerly a marine, transported for desertion, was put into the sick list with a foul sloughing ulcer on the leg over the fore part of tibia. Put on sick list, 28 May 1837. Discharged 8 July 1837 from the Hospital.

Folios 12-13: case no 6, John Jones, aged 30, convict; taken ill at Sheerness; disease, ulcus, received a blow from iron bar on the right leg while employed in the dock yard at Chatham previous to his embarked on board this ship. Put on sick list, 30 May 1837. Discharged 24 September 1837.
Folios 13-14: case no 7, George Hardy, aged 21, private 80th Regiment.; taken ill at sea; disease, phlogosis. Put on sick list, 7 July 1837. Discharged 17 July 1837 to duty.

Folios 18-19: case no 11, John Probert, aged 20, private of the guard.; taken ill at sea; disease, dyspepsia. Put on sick list, 19 August 1837. Sent 5 October 1837 to military hospital at Hobert Town.
Folios 19-20: case no 12, James Lonsdale, aged 37, convict.; taken ill at sea; disease, synocha. Put on sick list, 4 September 1837. Sent 3 October 1837 to colonial hospital at Hoberton.
Folios 20-21: case no 13, Ambrose Elems, aged 24, convict.; taken ill at sea; disease, inflamed eyes and general debility, unhealthy appearances at the time of his embarkation, during the voyage to Van Diemens Land his strength daily failed without apparently any adequate cause. Put on sick list, 6 September 1837. Died 29 September 1837 at about 11 am.

Folios 30-33: Surgeon's general remarks. The ship was fitted out at Deptford in spring of 1837 for the transportation of 240 convicts to Van Diemen's Land. The military guard was embarked on 15 May, consisting of Captain Chambers of the 4th and ensign Singleton of the 80th Regiments, 30 soldiers, 4 women and six children, they all apparently enjoyed good health. The total number entered on the sick book during the voyage were 105 cases, of those 101 cases were discharged cured, three were sent to hospital on arrival, and one convict died on board.
