Prior to 1946 pensions and other benefits for seamen with long service at sea were provided by the Seaman's Pension Fund, set up under s.48 of the National Insurance Act 1911. At first it was administered by the Seamen's National Insurance Society, but it was reconstituted under s.27 of the National Health Insurance Act 1918, with a governing body representative of both shipowners and seamen. In 1931 it was incorporated by Royal Charter as the Royal Seamen's Pension Fund.
Since 1946 the Seaman's Pension Fund has continued to grant to mariners with long service, pensions additional to the national insurance retirement pension where the beneficiary's income is below a certain level.
