Description

Medical journal of HMS Curacoa, from 2 September to 3 November 1842 by James Syme, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in making a voyage from the Brazils and c.

[Note: ADM 101/95/4, 4A-4B are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/95/4].

Folios 1-2: Copy of sick list.

Folios 2-3: Surgeon's general remarks, that during the period of this journal the ship has performed a voyage from Brazil to England and was paid off at Chatham on the 30 November, her crew were in perfect health. The Surgeon makes further notes on case no 1, case no 2, case no 3 and case no 4, he also mentioned that before the ship was paid off a pension certificate was given to John Beatty, Able Seaman in consequence of being struck by the mizzen royal yard which hit his occiput on 6 September 1842.

Folios 4-6: case no 1, Joseph Field, aged 27, Able Seaman; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, palpitation of the heart; put on sick list 3 September 1842, sent 18 November 1842 to Haslar Hospital.

Folio 6: case no 2, Mr Gardner, aged 26, Mate; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, epilepsy; put on sick list 2 October 1842, discharged 9 October 1842 to duty.

Folio 7: case no 3, Henry Hough, aged 35, Carpenter's Crew; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, ulcer; put on sick list 20 October 1842, sent 18 November 1842 to Haslar Hospital.

Folio 7: case no 4, Mr Aynesley, aged 20, Mate; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, rheumatism & eruption; put on sick list 11 November 1842, sent 18 November 1842 to Haslar Hospital.

Folio 8: Nosological return of cases mentioned in the journal.
