Description

Medical and surgical journal of Her Majesty's convict ship Blenheim for 12 March to 31 July 1850 by Charles Henry Fuller, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in a voyage from England to Hobart Town, Van Dieman's Land.

[Note: ADM 101/12/6, 6A-6B are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/12/6].

Folio 1: Blank.

Folios 2-7: Copy of daily sick book.

Folios 8-10: Richard Clarke, aged 1 year and 3 months, child of a pensioner of the Guard; case number 1; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 16 April 1850. Died 15 May 1850.

Folios 10-13: Jonathon Hancock, aged 14, convict; case number 2; disease or hurt, phthisis. Put on sick list, 17 April 1850. Died 13 July 1850.

Folios 13-15: Richard Peterwood, aged 2, son of a pensioner of the Guard; case number 3; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 19 April 1850. Died 6 May 1850.

Folios 15-16: George Henry Burr, aged 22; case number 4; disease or hurt, hamoptysis. Put on sick list, 7 May 1850. Discharged 18 May 1850.

Folios 16-18: John F Hay, aged 18; case number 5; disease or hurt, phthisis. Put on sick list, 12 May 1850. Died 28 May 1850.

Folios 18-21: George Henry Burr, aged 23, convict; case number 6; disease or hurt, haemoptysis. Put on sick list, 20 May 1850. Discharged 24 July 1850 to hospital.

Folios 21-24: Samuel Clarke, aged 18, convict; case number 7; disease or hurt, phthisis. Put on sick list, 10 June 1850. Died 8 July 1850.

Folios 24-26: John Jackson, aged 24, convict; case number 8; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 15 June 1850. Died 6 July 1850.

Folios 26-29: Septimus Golightly, aged 21, convict; case number 9; disease or hurt, febris intermittens. Put on sick list, 21 May 1850. Discharged 25 July 1850 to hospital.

Folio 29: A nosological synopsis of the sick book.

Folio 30: A list of men who have received wounds or hurts, during the period of the journal. [No names recorded].

Folios 30-33: Surgeon's general remarks. Ship was in danger of going on shore on the Bolt Rocks, on the coast of Devonshire. Suggests that a half a pound of preserved carrot be issued and that preserved milk should be added to the list of medical comforts. Also records the average range of the thermometer with its maximum and minimum indications of temperature [in his cabin] during the voyage.
