Description

Medical journal of HMS Nimrod, from 24 March to 28 May 1858 by John Rose, surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed on the East India and China Station.

[Note: ADM 101/164, 1A-1B are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/164].

Folio 1: case no 1, George Beal, aged 25, Able Seaman; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, on passage from Shanghai to the Peiho River complained of rheumatic pains of syphilitic origin; put on sick list, 14 April 1858, sent 28 May 1858 to Hospital Ship Belleisle off the Paiho River.

Folio 2: case no 2, Thomas Lyndon, aged 23, Private Marine; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, ulcer on the right leg; put on sick list, 16 April 1858, sent 28 May 1858 to Hospital Ship Belleisle. The Surgeon states that he had an opportunity of visiting this patient there; the ulcer at first increased in size and a large slough formed, necrosis afterwards took place so that the result of the case is doubtful. He stated his opinion that probably he may be considered a fit case for invaliding.

Folio 2: case no 3, Charles Hayles, aged 17, Boy; taken ill at Peiho River; sick or hurt, phlegmon and ulcer; put on sick list, 8 May 1858, sent 28 May 1858 to Hospital Ship Belleisle.

Folio 2: case no 4, Henry Love, aged 21, Able Seaman; taken ill at the entrance of the Peiho River; sick or hurt, fracture of cranium, by a cannon ball after it has passed through the ship's side, it impinged on the left ear and produced externally and contused wound with great swelling and puffiness on the left side of the head, face and neck. There was considerable hemorrhage from the left ear; put on sick list, 20 May 1858, died 20 May 1858.

Folio 2: case no 5, John Sutton, aged 23, Stoker; taken ill at the Peiho Forts; sick or hurt, wound, during the action at the forts, while at his gun on deck was wound by jingall ball fire from a distance of about 300 yards which struck the posterior of the scalp and [cap?]; put on sick list, 20 May 1858, sent 28 May 1858 to Hospital Ship Belleisle.

Folio 2: case no 6, James Martin, aged 23, Able Seaman; taken ill at the Peiho Forts; sick or hurt, wound, during the action at the forts, received a contusion of left leg with abrasion of the skin around the ankle; put on sick list, 20 May 1858, he remained on the list on 28 May 1858 (the day which the Surgeon gave up charge of the sick), the Surgeon stated that 'it was, however probable that he would very soon be quite well and fit for duty'.

Folio 3: case no 7, Ernest A T Stubbs, aged 24, Lieutenant; taken ill at the Peiho Forts; sick or hurt, contusion of left leg by a splinter from the ship's side which was struck by a round shot; put on sick list, 20 May 1858, discharged 27 May 1858 to duty, (the other officers were employed on shore, in blowing up the Forts, transporting guns &c).

Folio 4: List of men who received wounds or hurts during the period of this journal. no on the ship's book 86, John Sutton, aged 23, Stoker; pension granted on 28 May 1858 by Assistant Surgeon; nature of hurts, lacerated and contused wound of scalp over crown of head, wound by jingall ball, on 20 May 1858.

Folios 4-5: Tables of medical statistics.

Folios 5-6: Surgeon's general remarks about the allied forces of Britain and France in the action against the Chinese on the 20 May 1858 at Peiho Forts on the entrance of the Peiho River.
