Description

Medical journal of HMS Dido, from 1 January to 24 August 1855 by R. Barnard, Surgeon, during which time the ship was employed on the Pacific Station. [Note: ADM 101/96/5, 5A and 5B are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/96/5].

Folios 3-4: case no. 1, T. Arnold, aged 36, Private Royal Marine; taken ill at Valparaiso; sick or hurt, contusio and consequent hemoptysis; put on sick list 20 September 1854, invalided 4 January 1856.

Folio 5: case no. 2, Samuel Saunders, aged 16, Boy 2nd Class; taken ill at Valparaiso; sick or hurt, morbus cordis; put on sick list 26 September 1854, invalided 4 January 1855.

Folio 6: case no. 3, William Honey, aged 46, Carpenter’s Crew; taken ill at Valparaiso; sick or hurt, chronic rheumatism particularly on the elbow joint; put on sick list 4 January 1855, invalided 4 January 1855.

Folios 6-8: case no. 4, Thomas Fagg, aged 25, Private Royal Marine; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, ascites, stated that he was never well since the infliction of severe corporal punishment 2 years ago in the Marine Barracks for desertion; put on sick list 22 January 1855, sent 21 March 1855 to sick quarter at Sandwich Island.

Folios 9-10: case no. 5, Samuel Dorgin, aged 28, Able Seaman; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, catarrhus and phthisis pulmonalis incipiens; put on sick list 17 April 1855, invalided 24 August 1855.

Folios 11-12: case no. 6, Frederick Park, aged 28, Lieutenant; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, acute hepatitis; put on sick list 6 August 1855, invalided 24 August 1855.

Folio 13: case no. 7, Robert Barnard, aged 37, Surgeon; taken ill at San Francisco; sick or hurt, ozaena, this officer suffered in the last 12 months from ulceration of the schneiderian membrane on the left side, which came on when his general health was impaired from service in the Western and Eastern Coasts of Africa; put on sick list 24 August 1855, invalided 24 August 1855.

Folios 15-16: Surgeon’s general remarks. During the period of this journal the crews of HMS Dido were exposed to great vicissitudes of temperature and climate. The ship left Valparaiso (Chile) early in January and proceeded to the Sandwich Islands touching at Callao, after the period of nearly 6 weeks there the ship sailed to the northward and westward to meet the [French] squadron destined in the combined operation in attack on [Petropaulovski?], kamschatka. The Surgeon remarks that the French ships suffered severely from scurvy while there was no trace of the disease in the Dido, the Surgeon also makes further remarks on Case no. 1, Case no. 2, Case no. 5, Case no. 6, Case no. 7.
