Medical and surgical journal of HMS Orestes for 1 January to 31 December 1851 by R. Bernard, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in the Cape of Good Hope Station.

Folios 4-5: Timothy Migahan, aged 20, ordinary seaman; case number 1; disease or hurt, phlegmon and amputation of the thumb. Put on sick list, 16 February 1851 at sea. Discharged 3 May 1851 invalided.
Folios 5-6: Henry Johnstone, aged 30, quartermaster; case number 2; disease or hurt, acute rheumatism. Put on sick list, 22 February 1851 at sea. Discharged 26 April 1851 to hospital.
Folio 6: William Fabian, aged 20, carpenter’s crew; case number 3; disease or hurt, chronic dysentery. Put on sick list, 1 March1851 in St Augustines Bay, Madagasgar. Discharged 3 May 1851 invalided.

Folio 7: Henry Brown, aged 32, painter; case number 7; disease or hurt, contusion to right shoulder and chest resulting from a fall from a coach in a state of intoxication. Put on sick list, 29 April 1851. Discharged 30 April 1851 to hospital.
Folio 8: William Gover, aged 16, Boy 2nd Class; case number 8; disease or hurt, acute rheumatism. Put on sick list, 1 May 1851 at the Cape of Good Hope. Discharged 3 May 1851 to hospital.

Folio 13: James Santot, aged 27, cook; case number 12; disease or hurt, chronic rheumatism. Put on sick list, 18 September 1851 at sea. Discharged 5 October 1851 to hospital.
Folio 13: H.E. Pendleton, aged 21; case number 13; disease or hurt, asphexia from drowning on, 22 September 1851 in Simons Bay. Folio 14: A nosological synopsis of the sick book kept during the period of the journal.
Folio 15: A list of men who have received wounds or hurts, during the period of the journal. Timothy Migahan, aged 20, ordinary seaman, ship pay book number-33; date pension certificate granted, 5 May 1851; hurt or wound-a splinter of wood was forced under the nail of the left thumb on 14 September 1850 while he was scraping the mast. The consequence was gangrene of that member which was amputated on 13 March 1851.
