Description

Medical and surgical journal of HMS Plover for 1 January to 20 September 1851, during which time the said ship was employed in the Behring’s Straits (Arctic searching expedition). [Note: ADM 101/113/2, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D and 2E are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/113/2].

Folios 1-2: Henry Thornley, aged 22, able seaman; case number 1; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 3 December 1850 at Grantley Harbour. Discharged 5 January 1851 to duty.

Folios 2-4: William Brian, aged 25, able seaman; case number 2; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 15 December 1850 at Grantley Harbour. Discharged 13 January 1851 to duty.

Folio 4: Edward Beard, aged 32, private, marine; case number 3; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 30 December 1850 at Grantley Harbour. Discharged 8 January 1851 to duty.

Folios 4-5: Hugh Evans, aged 32, quartermaster; case number 4; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 1 January 1851 at Grantley Harbour. Discharged 24 January 1851 to duty.

Folios 5-7: Robert German, aged 35, boatswain’s mate; case number 5; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 11 January 1851 at Grantley Harbour. Discharged 20 February 1851 to duty.

Folios 7-9: Hugh Evans, aged 32, quartermaster; case number 6; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 23 February 1851 at Grantley Harbour. Discharged 17 June 1851 to duty.

Folios 9-10: William H. Bishop, aged 24, private, marine; case number 7; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 13 March 1851 at Grantley Harbour. Discharged 30 March 1851 to duty.

Folio 10: Joseph [Sugrue?], aged 27, able seaman; case number 8; disease or hurt, catarrhus. Put on sick list, 7 August 1851 at St Lawrence Bay, Behring’s Straits. Discharged 11 August 1851 to duty.

Folio 10: A nosological synopsis of the sick book kept during the period of the journal.

Folio 11: A list of men who have received wounds or hurts, during the period of the journal. [No names recorded].

Folios 11-13: Surgeon’s general remarks including a table showing the monthly range and mean of the thermometer for January to September 1851 (folio 13).
