Description

Medical and surgical journal of HMS Plover for 1 January to 31 December 1850 by John Simpson, Assistant Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in the Behring’s Straits (Arctic searching expedition). [Note: ADM 101/113/2, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D and 2E are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/113/2].

Folios 1-3: Copy of sick list.

Folios 3-4: John Dean, aged 36, able seaman; case number 1; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 24 January 1850 at Kolzbne Sound. Discharged 9 February 1850 to duty.

Folio 4: John Clarke, aged 33, able seaman; case number 2; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 24 January 1850. Discharged 11 February 1850 at Kolzbne Sound to duty.

Folios 4-5: William Simpson, aged 34, sergeant, marine; case number 3; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 15 March 1850 at Kolzbne Sound. Discharged 28 March 1850 to duty.

Folio 5: C.W. Stevenson, aged 19, master’s assistant; case number 4; disease or hurt, dysuria. Put on sick list, 21 March 1850. Discharged 26 March 1850 at Kolzbne Sound to duty.

Folios 5-6: Thomas Tobin, aged 23, able seaman; case number 5; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 21 March 1850. Discharged 12 April 1850 at Kolzbne Sound to duty.

Folios 8-9: Thomas Tobin, aged 24, able seaman; case number 12; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 13 July 1850 at Kolzbne Sound. Discharged 25 July 1850 to duty.

Folio 9: Richard Creber, aged 33; case number 13; disease or hurt, febris intermittens. Put on sick list, 24 August 1850 at sea. Discharged 14 September 1850 to duty.

Folios 9-10: John Johns, aged 33, carpenter; case number 14; disease or hurt, febris remit gastric. Put on sick list, 12 September 1850. Discharged 19 September 1850 for exchange into Herald.

Folio 11: A nosological synopsis of the sick book kept during the period of the journal.

Folios 12-14: Surgeon’s general remarks including a scale of provisions for one week (folio 13) and a table showing the monthly range and mean of the thermometer for January to December 1850 (folio 14).

Folios 15-16: Blank.
