Description

Medical and surgical journal of HMS Plover for 1 January to 31 December 1849 by John Simpson, Assistant Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in the Behring’s Straits (Arctic searching expedition).

[Note: ADM 101/113/2, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D and 2E are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/113/2].

Folios 1-2: Copy of sick list. Folios 2-3: John Kerrick, aged 34, sailmaker; case number 1; disease or hurt, contusion, resulting from a fall from the fore ladder. Put on sick list, 2 January 1849 at Ourrel. Discharged 1 February 1849 to duty.

Folios 3-5: John Kerrick, aged 34, sailmaker; case number 2; disease or hurt, phthisis. Put on sick list, 5 February 1849. Died 7 March 1849 at Ourel.

Folios 5-6: W.H. Moore, aged 24, master’s assistant; case number 3; disease or hurt, phlogosis being the effects of cold. Put on sick list, 17 February 1849 at Ourel. Discharged 15 April 1849 to duty.

Folios 6-9: John Head, aged 27, private, marine; case number 4; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 7 March 1849 at Ourel. Discharged 17 July 1849 invalided.

Folio 9: John Dean, aged 32, quartermaster; case number 5; disease or hurt, catarrhus. Put on sick list, 8 March 1849 at Ourel. Discharged 14 March 1849 to duty.

Folio 9: William Warby, aged 27, able seaman; case number 6; disease or hurt, catarrhus. Put on sick list, 17 March 1849 at Ourel. Discharged 29 March 1849 to duty.

Folios 9-10: Alexander Cameron, aged 24, able seaman; case number 7; disease or hurt, vulnus. Put on sick list, 26 April 1849 at Ourel. Discharged 7 June 1849 to duty.

Folios 10-11: C.W.Stevenson, aged 18, master’s assistant; case number 8; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 29 April 1849 at Ourel. Discharged 4 June 1849 to duty.

Folio 11: John Abernethy, aged 41, acting sea mate; case number 9; disease or hurt, neuralgia. Put on sick list, 9 June 1849 at Ourel. Discharged 23 June 1849 to duty.

Folio 11: Robert Searle, aged 27, private, marine; case number 10; disease or hurt, catarrhus. Put on sick list, 7 September 1849 at [Kotzebin?]. Discharged 23 September 1849 to duty.

Folios 11-12: William Simpson, aged 33, sergeant, marine; case number 11; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 20 December 1849 at [Kotzebin? Sound]. Discharged 22 January 1850 to duty.

Folio 12: A nosological synopsis of the sick book kept during the period of the journal.

Folio 10: A list of men who have received wounds or hurts, during the period of the journal. Alexander Cameron, aged 34, able seaman, number on ship’s books-17; date pension certificate granted, 1 September 1851, wound of palm with a marlin spike.

Folios 10-12: Surgeon’s general remarks including a table on (folio 14) showing the monthly range and mean of the thermometer for January to December 1851.
