Description

Medical and surgical journal of HMS Plover for 6 December 1847 to 31 December 1848 by John Simpson, Assistant Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in particular services (Behring’s Strait and voyages thither).

[Note: ADM 101/113/2, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D and 2E are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/113/2].

Folio 1: Copy of sick list.

Folio 2: Henry Thursden, aged 21, ordinary seaman; case number 1; disease or hurt, palpitation and debility. Put on sick list, 21 January 1848 at Plymouth. Discharged 24 January 1848 to hospital.

Folios 2-3: Jonah Priddle, aged 28, private, marine; case number 2; disease or hurt, contusion of right forefinger followed by suppuration. Put on sick list, 27 January 1848 in the Dockyard. Discharged 20 February 1848 to duty.

Folios 3-4: John Watson, aged 27, gun room steward; case number 3; disease or hurt, enteritis. Put on sick list, 6 February 1848 at sea. Discharged 21 February 1848 to duty.

Folios 4-5: John Watson, aged 27, gun room steward; case number 4; disease or hurt, obstipatio. Put on sick list, 29 February 1848 at sea. Discharged 9 May 1848 invalided at Falkland Island.

Folios 5-6: John Johns, aged 31, Carpenter; case number 5; disease or hurt, febris intermittens. Put on sick list, 2 April 1848 at sea. Discharged 13 May 1848 to duty.

Folios 6-7: Thomas Lucas, aged 24, able seaman; case number 6; disease or hurt, febris intermittens. Put on sick list, 11 April 1848 at sea. Discharged 18 April 1848 to duty.

Folio 7: Thomas Lucas, aged 24, able seaman; case number 7; disease or hurt, febris intermittens. Put on sick list, 30 April 1848 at sea. Discharged 3 May 1848 to duty.

Folio 7: Thomas Lucas, aged 24, able seaman; case number 8; disease or hurt, febris intermittens. Put on sick list, 7 May 1848 at sea. Discharged 20 May 1848 to duty.

Folio 7: Thomas Lucas, aged 24, able seaman; case number 9; disease or hurt, febris intermittens. Put on sick list, 26 May 1848 at sea. Discharged 30 May 1848 to duty.

Folios 7-8: William Seymour, aged 23, able seaman; case number 10; disease or hurt, febris intermittens. Put on sick list, 17 June 1848 at sea. Discharged 2 July 1848 to duty.

Folio 8: John Phillips, aged 39, able seaman; case number 11; disease or hurt, enuresis. Put on sick list, 19 June 1848 at sea. Discharged 26 June 1848 to duty.

Folio 8: Thomas Lucas, aged 24, able seaman; case number 12; disease or hurt, contusion and enuresis. Put on sick list, 24 June 1848 at sea. Discharged 30 June 1848 to duty.

Folio 9: A nosological synopsis of the sick book kept during the period of the journal.

Folio 10: A list of men who have received wounds or hurts, during the period of the journal. [No names recorded].
