KV 5/84
1936 Jun 12 - 1937 Jun 22
Hitler Jugend, Hitler Youth. Investigation of activities of the Hitler Jugend (HJ) in the UK in the years leading up to the Second World War, in particular bicycling tours by parties of HJ. The danger of reconnaissance activity was recognised, though initially on the basis of an exaggerated newspaper report about 'spyclists'. There was on the German side a wish for closer links with the Boy Scout Association. The file contains copies of the HJ's 'Wille und Macht' and intercepted correspondence
Serial 64a: quotes 1937 instructions apparently to cycling parties of Hitler Youth visiting the UK (this was later revealed as a newspaper distortion of instructions which, at least overtly, covered only Germany) to note landmarks, bridges etc 'in such a way that you will be able to recognise them by night'. An attached questionnaire included 'matters of importance in preparation for a future war'
