Description
This dataset contains a snapshot of the Listed Building System taken in 2005. The Listed Building System was developed as an enquiry and information tool for English Heritage staff; and to complement the official statutory record of Listed Buildings. This official record remained the paper list entries contained in the 'Greenback' and 'Blueback' volumes, issued by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The computerised LBS system did not replace this official paper record; it simply allowed improved access to the contents. English Heritage list buildings to identify England's heritage. Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, the Secretary of State has a statutory duty to list buildings of special architectural or historic interest. In choosing a building for listing, other factors such as the cost of maintaining the building, its unsuitability to modern needs, and its current state of repair are not considered, unless these things have affected its architectural interest. These things can be considered if an owner wishes to demolish or alter a listed building. The list is a register; it simply puts a mark against those buildings that are considered special. The original greenback and blueback volumes contained list descriptions of buildings, and pertinent details of location, materials, dates, associated organisations, associated people, and bibliographic references. For NDAD purposes, the dates of the dataset's contents have been described as 1995-2005, i.e. when the entries were actually input. However, the dates of the listed buildings in the dataset cover a wide range of history; the earliest listed buildings date from the 1st century, and there are some dating from Roman and Saxon periods. The latest building date found in the dataset is 1999. The earliest printed source found in the dataset is from 1332, although most of them are from the 16th century onwards. There are also dates (in the table List Addresses) for when List entries were originally made; these begin around 1900. The dataset contains the following types of data: Address data:This gives names and addresses of Listed Buildings and structures. The data includes street names, street sides, address types (to distinguish statutory addresses from non-statutory addresses), and postcodes. Also included were number(s) of buildings in the List. Descriptive data:A full textual description of the listed building is contained in the two Description tables, descriptions1 and descriptions2. Administrative location data:This shows where the listed building is situated, and comprises county, district, parish and locality. Building Phase data:This relates to physical buildings and date phases for the entry. Each significant date phase also requires a building type. The building type field uses terms to classify the building by its function or form; and uses controlled vocabulary from the Thesaurus of Monument Types. The two date fields indicate the minimum and maximum date within the range to which the building phase belongs. The dataset consists of 28 tables.
