Description (What the record is about)
- This dataset consists of data gathered in the 2001-2002 British Crime Survey. The survey was conducted by BMRB (British Market Research Bureau) Social Research International on behalf of the Crime and Criminal Justice Unit of the Home Office's Research Development and Statistics Directorate. The British Crime Survey (BCS) is a well-established study, one of the largest social research surveys conducted in England and Wales. It is primarily a 'victimisation' survey, in which respondents are asked about the experiences of property crimes of the household (e.g. burglary) and personal crimes (e.g. theft from the person) which they themselves have experienced. For the 2001/2 Survey, the BCS moved to the financial year cycle used by similar large government surveys (such as the General Household Survey) rather than asking respondents about their experiences of crime from the preceding 1st January, as was previously the case. This survey aimed at a target sample of 40,000 households in England and Wales, consisting of a representative cross-section of 37,000 households and a special booster sample of 3,000 non-white adults. The dataset contains 32,824 records for the main sample and 5,534 records for the non-white ethnic boost sample. Respondents were asked about experiences of crime between April 2000 to March 2002. The fieldwork for the 2001/2 survey was carried out between April 2001-March 2002. Although there is some overlap between the contents of this dataset and the 2001 dataset, it is clear that this dataset contains only Type B interviews and probably corresponds to fieldwork carried out from July 2001-March 2002. Significan changes were made to the design of the 2001 British Crime Survey compared with previous sweeps. The two main changes introduced in 2001 were an increase in the sample size, and a move towards continuous sampling fieldwork with a different reference period from that used on previous sweeps. This dataset contains evidence of the increased sample size for 2001, the ethnic and youth boost samples, and deployment of Type B interviews. It also includes responses to questions that were actually asked in 2002, and four questionnaire modules (mobile phone theft, technology crimes, drinking behaviour and stolen goods) which were not deployed in the first six months of the survey. As usual, the names and addresses of interviewees do not form part of the 2001/2 BCS dataset, and would not have been transferred to the Home Office by the research contractors. Considerable emphasis was given in the course of conducting the interview to assure sample members that their information was provided in confidence. For this reason, the dataset does not identify the location of the sampled areas (postcode sectors) and this information is likewise not released to the Home Office by the research contractors. In the dataset, the data for each interview is spread between tables which broadly correspond to the sections of the electronic questionnaire. The dataset consists of 38 tables.
