Description

Medical and surgical journal of HMS Maidstone for 22 May 1812 to 31 May 1813 by William Bill Carlyle, during which time the said ship was employed in the American station.

Folio 1: Patrick Burns, aged 48, cooper; sick or hurt, gravel complaint; Put on sick list, 8 June 1812 at Plymouth, discharged 8 June 1812.

Folio 1: John Murphy, aged 30, seaman; sick or hurt, [?]; Put on sick list, 8 June 1812 at sea, discharged 8 June 1812 to the hospital at Plymouth.

Folios 2-3: John Kelly, aged 15; sick or hurt, [?]; Put on sick list, 21 June 1812 at sea, discharged 1 July 1812 to duty.

Folios 3-6: James Barnet, aged 30; sick or hurt, severe pains in all limbs; Put on sick list, 12 June 1812 at sea, discharged 17 July 1812 to the naval hospital at Halifax.

Folios 7-11: Thomas Anderson, aged 30, seaman; sick or hurt, pain in abdomen; Put on sick list, 1 September 1812 off New York, discharged 24 October 1812 to the naval hospital at Halifax.

Folios 11-14: Mr Kendall, aged 24, captain's clerk; sick or hurt, chancres; Put on sick list, 22 August 1812 at sea, discharged 24 October 1812 to the naval hospital at Halifax.

Folio 15: Michael Leahay, aged 24, seaman; sick or hurt, fell from the mizzen stay upon one of the belaying pins which has passes through the head of the right sartorious muscle near its origin from the [?] and run in a slanting direction along the dorsum of the ilium to the depth of about six inches; Put on sick list, 20 October 1812 at Halifax, discharged 25 October 1812 to the naval hospital at Halifax.

Folio 16: Joseph Bingham, aged 24, seaman; sick or hurt, received two severe wounds from musket balls in action; Put on sick list, 24 February 1813 at anchor in Chesapeake, discharged 24 March 1813 to duty.

Folio 17: John Duggin, aged 22, seaman; sick or hurt, retention of urine; Put on sick list, 7 January 1813 at Bermuda, discharged 7 January 1813 to the naval hospital in Bermuda.

Folios 17-18: Samuel Brett, aged 28, seaman; sick or hurt, severe bruise of left testicle; Put on sick list, 1 December 1812 at sea, discharged 5 January 1813 to hospital.

Folios 19-20: James Gray, aged 45, seaman; sick or hurt, severe lacerated wound of the glutei muscles of the left side; Put on sick list, 21 July 1813 at anchor in the Chesapeake, discharged 20 April 1813.

Folios 21-22: William Brown, aged 21, seaman; sick or hurt, anterior side of the right shoulder is occupied by a wound from a cutlass extending from the clavicle of the shoulder to the exterior of the arm; Put on sick list, 21 March 1813 in the Hampton Roads, discharged 20 May 1813.

Folios 22-23: Lieutenant Brand (of HMS Orpheus), aged 25; sick or hurt, fractured left arm, brachial artery divided by two musket balls. Injuries received in assisting in the capture of four letters of marque; Put on sick list, 3 April 1813 in the river [?], discharged 16 April 1813 to the St Domingo.

Folio 23: Benjamin Russel, aged 25, seaman; sick or hurt, injured in the arm by an accidental shooting of a musket while in action against the enemy; Put on sick list, 29 April 1813 in the Susquihanah, discharged 1 June 1813.

Folio 24: William King, aged 30, seaman (of HMS Marlborough); sick or hurt, wounded in the right thigh by musket fire; Put on sick list, 7 May 1813 at anchor in the Susquihanah, discharged 29 May 1813.

Folio 25: A numerical abstract of the medical cases mentioned in the journal together with the Surgeon's general remarks.
