Description (What the record is about)
- This dataset consists of data gathered from independent schools in England during the Schools' Census conducted by the Department for Education in 1994. The enumeration date was the third Thursday in January (20 January 1994). The dataset covers independent schools, which were defined by the Department for Education as "schools registered under Section 70 of the Education Act 1944 and . . . subject to inspection by HM Inspectors of Schools". Independent schools were private schools outside the state sector. The dataset also covers City Technology Colleges, which were defined by the Department for Education as schools which "take the form of a charitable company limited by guarantee. The sponsors constitute an educational trust and will own or lease the college and appoint their representatives to the Board of Governors." All figures for independent schools include City Technology Colleges. The 1994 dataset has a field, INDCTC, to distinguish CTCs from other schools. The dataset contains data for 2226 schools. The data was gathered via Form 101a (Schools) returns. The dataset consists of a single table (SCENOS94) which contains one record per school.
