Description

Registered files concerned with the management of prisons and the treatment of prisoners. They are from the 'Old Convict' Series, the 'Old Local' series and the 17000 series of subject files and concern matters arising in:

  • the course of the business of administering the convict prisons
  • local prisons and borstal institutions
  • the custody and treatment of the inmates of those establishments
  • the pay and conditions of service etc of the staff.

With a number of exceptions, the papers span the period 1877 to 1929

Arrangement
Arrangement

A completely new system of registration of subject files - the A series files - was put into operation on 1st January 1929. Because of peculiarities in the registration system, and the loss of pre 1922 files, the numerical order could not be retained for the purposes of listing as it provided no obvious order, either chronological or of subject.

The files are now arranged in alphabetical order of subject within each subseries, each file being consecutively numbered.

Separated material

Many of the papers earlier than 1922 were re-pulped to supply paper during the Second World War.
