Description

Journal of HM Schooner Pickle by [Theobald] Mills, Surgeon, for 21 March 1806 to 5 July 1806, during which time the said ship was employed in the Channel service.

[Note: ADM 101/112/8, 8A-8B are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/112/8].

Folio 1: Joseph Tripler, aged 21, seaman; taken ill in Channel; disease or hurt, in his hurry up to the deck got his feet into the coppers which were half full of warm water; taken ill, 24 March 1806, discharged 11 April 1806 to duty.

Folio 2: Hugh Hughes, aged 20, seaman; taken ill in Channel; disease or hurt, his breast was struck by one of the anchor flukes, complained of difficulty of breathing and very great pain when ever he attempted to cough; taken ill, 4 April 1806, discharged 12 April 1806 to duty.

Folio 2: Mr Elery, aged 35, acting master; taken ill in Channel; disease or hurt, struck his eye against some obstacle, great degree of inflammation with much pain; taken ill, 21 April 1806, discharged 25 April 1806 to duty.

Folios 2-3: James Rowden, aged 36, boatswain's mate; taken ill in Channel; disease or hurt, tumour on the first phalanx of the index finger acute pain, skin very much thickened and no fluctuation perceptible to the feel; taken ill, 26 April 1806, discharged 12 May 1806 to duty. Off Cadiz Lat 36º 31' during the whole of the cure and for the latter part of the time the ships company were living upon salt provision and in warm climate.

Folio 4: Mr Drake, aged 16, midshipman; taken ill off Cape St Vincent; disease or hurt, complained of a soreness in his eyes, very much inflamed and constantly suffused with tears; taken ill, 2 May 1806, discharged 8 May 1806 to duty.

Folio 4: John Smith, aged 24, seaman; taken ill at Cape Finisterre; disease or hurt, complained of a pain in all his bones more especially when he got warm in his hammock, he was entirely free from any symptoms of pyrexia which made me conclude it was chronick rheumatism; taken ill, 4 May 1806.

Folios 4-5: Hutchins Copeland, aged 26, carpenter's mate; taken ill at Cape Finisterre; disease or hurt, complained of acute pain in his eyes with a constant discharge of water, he continued his duty the whole time of the cure; taken ill, 4 May 1806, cured 8 May 1806.

Folio 5: John Edwards, aged 40, seaman; disease or hurt, in consequence of hauling the ropes, hit himself at the lumbar vertibra against the scuttle of the fore hatchway; taken ill, 5 May 1806, discharged 9 May 1806 to duty.

Folios 5-6: James Muggridge, aged 20, seaman; taken ill at Plymouth Sound; disease or hurt, complained of a swelling in his groin with three ulcers on the prepuce and two on the glans penis; taken ill, 10 June 1806, discharged 29 June 1806 to duty.

Folio 6: John Oxford, aged 25, seaman; taken ill at Plymouth Sound; disease or hurt, coming from off the bowsprit missed his footing and fell with his legs extended and one of the belaying pins of the rack, which caused an immediate protrusion of one of the viscera of the right side; taken ill, 6 June 1806, discharged 12 July 1806 to duty.

Folio 7: Nicholas Gillett, aged 35, seaman; taken ill off the Lizard; disease or hurt, difficulty of breathing attended with a wheezing cough returning at intervals, loss of appetite and frequent inclination to vomit; taken ill, 8 July 1806, discharged 12 July 1806 to duty.
