Description

Medical and surgical journal of H.M. cutter Nile for 10 November 1808 to 25 May 1809 by Alexander Telfer, surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in the Channel and coast of Portugal.

[Note: ADM 101/110/2, 2A-2B are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/110/2].

Folios 1-2: John Danks, aged 22, marine; disease or hurt, debility, pain in the loins, and limbs, headache and an aversion to food. Put on sick list, 10 December 1808 in Portsmouth harbour. Discharged 19 December 1808 to Haslar hospital.

Folio 2: William Bailey, aged 27, marine; disease or hurt, lassitude, pain in the back and stomach with alternate heats and chills. Put on sick list, 14 December 1808 in Portsmouth harbour. Discharged 19 December 1808 to Haslar hospital.

Folios 2-4: Daniel Farro, aged 32, landsman; disease or hurt, complains of pains in the loins and a sense of weariness over the whole body with a sensation of weight and oppression in the stomach. Put on sick list, 8 January 1809 at Spithead. Discharged 20 January 1809 to duty.

Folios 2-3: Thomas Bartlett, aged 28, marine; disease or hurt, is affected with pains in the back and limbs, severe headache, an uneasy sensation in the stomach and aversion to food. Put on sick list, 8 January 1809 at Spithead. Discharged 11 January 1809 to Haslar Hospital.

Folios 3-4: Richard Bayne, aged 22, marine; disease or hurt, complains of irregular heats and chills, loss of appetite, headache and general symptoms of uneasiness. Put on sick list, 15 January 1809 at Spithead. Discharged 27 January 1809 to duty.

Folios 5-6: Blank.

Folio 7: a numerical abstract of the medical cases mentioned in the journal.
