Description

Medical and surgical journal of H.M. cutter Nile for 2 May 1807 to 9 November 1808 by Alexander Telfer, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in the Channel and Mediterranean stations.

[Note: ADM 101/110/2, 2A-2B are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/110/2].

Folios 1-2: James Bragg, aged 49, ordinary seaman; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 17 July 1807 off Rochfort. Discharged 25 July 1807 to duty.

Folios 2-6: John Whitehead, aged 22, marine; disease or hurt, loss of appetite, rigors, headache, pain in the loins, general lassitude, prostration of strength and oppression about the pracordia with nausea and vomiting. Put on sick list, 1 August 1807 off Rochfort. Discharged 4 October 1807 to duty.

Folios 3-4: Frederick Andrews, aged 20, ordinary seaman; disease or hurt, complains of pain in the breast greatly increased on a full inspiration and pyrexia. Put on sick list, 14 August 1807 off Rochfort. Discharged 22 August 1807 to duty.

Folios 4-5: David Baraman, aged 32, landsman; disease or hurt, sharp pain under the sternum. Put on sick list, 3 September 1807 off Rochfort. Discharged 12 September 1807 to duty.

Folios 5-6: John Muckridge, aged 22, ordinary seaman; disease or hurt, affected with pyrexia pain in the thorax difficult respiration and cough. Put on sick list, 12 September 1807 in the Channel. Discharged 24 September 1807 to duty.

Folios 6-9: William Watson, aged 55; disease or hurt, affected with pyrexia pain in the thorax difficult respiration and cough. Put on sick list, 2 October 1807 off Rochfort. Died 25 October 1807.

Folios 7-9: William Hale, aged 28, marine; disease or hurt, fit of coughing with blood brought up soon followed by rigors and sharp pain in the breast impeding respiration. Put on sick list, 12 October 1807 off Rochfort. Discharged 30 October 1807 to Plymouth hospital.

Folios 8-9: William Heyden, aged 40, marine; disease or hurt, vomiting and anxiety about the procordia. Put on sick list, 23 October 1807 off Rochfort. Died 23 October 1807.

Folio 10: John Bartlett, aged 22, landsman; disease or hurt, has been on the sick list six weeks pat for rheumatism. Put on sick list, 30 October 1807 in Plymouth Harbour. Discharged to Plymouth hospital on 30 October 1807. Folio 10: William Bailey, aged 36, sergeant; disease or hurt, universal debility, headache and pains in the loins and vomiting. Put on sick list, 24 May 1808 off Sardegna. Discharged to Malta hospital on 29 May 1808.

Folio 10: John Whitehead, aged 23, marine; disease or hurt, chancre. Put on sick list, 2 August 1808 in Malta Harbour. Discharged to Malta hospital on 2 August 1808. Folio 11: Pollard Black, aged 28, able seaman; disease or hurt, inguinal hernia. Put on sick list, 22 October 1808 in the Channel. Discharged 29 October 1808 to duty.

Folio 12: Surgeon’s general remarks. Three cases of pneumonia occurred which I have not inserted in this journal, as they yielded on the first and second day to a few bleedings. I have not inserted any of the venereal cases that occurred except the one sent to the hospital they being slight and all terminated well. I have not inserted any cases of ulcer for the same reason. From the first of November 1807 until now the crew have been extremely healthy and there is not at present a single man on the sick list. [signed] Alexr Telfer.
