Description

This series contains records of the Clerk of the Privy Council and comprises lists of persons nominated annually for the office of sheriff in English and Welsh counties, with the reasons, if any, given by nominees seeking to be excused from service.

Most lists contain a brief note indicating when appointments were gazetted, warrants issued, etc. There are, however, no nominations for Lancaster and those for Cornwall cover the years 1774 to 1784 and 1820 to 1842 only.

Related material

In Lancaster appointments are made by the sovereign in right of the Duchy, for related records see DL 21

In Cornwall appointments are made by the Prince of Wales as Duke of Cornwall and enquiries concerning such further records that may have survived should be directed to the Duchy of Cornwall Office.
