Review of UK Nationality Law.
Proposal to introduce two types of citizenship, British Citizenship and British Overseas Citizenship, to replace single Citizenship of the UK and Colonies. Includes material on the likely reactions of the Commonwealth countries and dependent territories such as Hong Kong, Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands. There are also estimates of the number of British subjects and citizens of the UK and colonies, and of British subjects without citizenship.
Issues such as transitional arrangements between the old system and the new, the question of dual nationality and the impact on immigration are considered, as well as the possibility that the changes in legislation could be opposed by the European Parliament.
Also includes a draft copy of a consultative document, with comments on the text from the Home Office.
