KV 6/79
1945 Apr 16 - 1947 Jan 07
Jupp HOVEN: German. In 1929 HOVEN attended a conference of 'revolutionary nationalists' at which he met leading IRA figures. Thereafter, until 1939 he visited Ireland, both North and South, regularly and extensively, on behalf of the Buro 'J', the JAHNKE Bureau which collected intelligence outside Germany for RIBBENTROP. During the war HOVEN belonged to a unit, 'Sonderstab Herkules', and was involved with Abwehr plans to penetrate Ireland, by means of contact with the IRA both to obtain intelligence and to commit acts of sabotage against Britain. All of these plans were said to have failed. From 1941 HOVEN was trying, equally unsuccessfully it seems, to recruit Irish POWs to form an Irish Brigade on the lines of the Casement Brigade
At serial 161x are details of Abwehr plans to sabotage the Panama Canal, none of which in the event were put into action. Volumes 1 and 2 were destroyed in 1958
