This series consists of sheriffs' rolls and record the names of those nominated at the Queen's Bench Division of the High Court of Justice and its predecessors for the office of sheriff in England (except for Cornwall and Lancaster) and Wales. Appointment was made by the crown in council and each roll, besides being pricked by the sovereign to denote the names of those appointed, bears the royal sign manual.
