Description

These manuals and instructions were issued on behalf of the Director General of Ordnance Survey or senior management to relevant groups of staff for undertaking surveying and computation work. They include cartographic specifications to be followed in the drafting and drawing of maps, and contain details of what should be depicted and in what format.

The earliest examples were issued in hardback; alterations were made in manuscript or tipped in with glue. After World War II, they were superseded by a loose-leaf format. Where possible, a clean original has been transferred, with the amendments kept separately; however, for many manuals it has not been possible to do this and an amended copy only has been transferred.
