Description

Surgical journal of HMS Abergavenny by George Brown, surgeon, covering 25 May 1797 to 16 June 1798 during which time the ship was employed in the West Indies.

[Note: ADM 101/80/2, 2A-2C are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/80/2].

Folios 2-3: John Matthew Young, aged 30, marine; disease or hurt, endeavouring to board an enemy's vessel was wounded by a musket ball entering between the second and third ribs on the left side of the sternum coming out under the scapula on the opposite side; dates on sick list, 23 May-29 June 1797; discharged to duty.

Folio 3: Duncan White, aged 28, seaman; disease or hurt, endeavouring to board an enemy's vessel was wounded in the right side by a musket ball but it scaresley penetrated the cavity of the thorax nor created any bad symptoms; dates on sick list, 23 May-16 June 1798; discharged to duty.

Folio 3: Duke Bl[?]; disease or hurt, fell from the main deck into the hold his head struck on one of the shot lockers which produced a hamoerrage from his mouth, nose and ears ; date on sick list, 23 Aug 1797; died.

Folio 4: John Williston, aged 14, boy; disease or hurt, fracture of the first joint of the great toe on right foot; dates on sick list, 2-20 March 1797; discharged to duty.

Folio 4: William Bradshaw, aged 26, seaman; disease or hurt, fell from the mizzen rigging in going aloft to hand sails dislocated right foot; dates on sick list, 26 April-16 May 1798; discharged to duty.

Folio 5: Murdock McKoy, aged 30, seaman; disease or hurt, fell from the lower deck into the hold of the ship fracturing the 4th and 5th rib of the left side; dates on sick list, 1-18 May 1798; discharged to duty.

Folio 5: John Robinson, aged 28, seaman; disease or hurt, in tacking the ship, left leg entangled with the fore sheet which fractured the patella and the end of the tibia; date on sick list, 15 Feb 1798; sent to hospital at Cape Nicholas Mole.

Folio 5: Thomas Willis, aged 26, marine; disease or hurt, in state of intoxication fell from his hammock and fractured the clavicle of the left side; date on sick list, 27 May 1798; sent to hospital at Cape Nicholas Mole.
