The Special Projects Directorate was a short-lived administrative unit of the Overseas Development departments, the role of which was to advise on questions of funding and consultancy work for major development projects (such as the development of the steelworks at Durgapur, India), to monitor projects as they progressed, and to scrutinise and make recommendations on the basis of final projects reports. The directorate was formed out of the Industrial and Engineering Department in 1966, originally as part of the Geographical Division, but then as a separate unit. The directorate was placed in the Aid Policy and Finance Division in 1971, and later the same year was absorbed into a new Private Investment and Consultancies Department.
