Records in the MID series relate to the work of the various departments of the overseas development ministry and administration responsible for the provision of aid and development in the Mediterranean and the near and middle-east. This was aid in the form either of direct loans and technical assistance, or aid administered through multi-lateral organisations, principally the United Nations and the Central Treaty Organisation (CENTO). The series includes some files relating to development in the Pacific region from 1971-1972.
Selected files in this series relate to major development and aid projects in the Mediterranean (Cyprus, Gibraltar, Malta and Yugoslavia), the Near East (Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey), Arabia (Bahrain, Muscat and Oman, Saudi Arabia, the Trucial States and the Yemen and Aden), the Middle East (Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and Pakistan), as well as files relating to central policy on the work of the Middle East Development Division. There are also a few files on development projects in the Far East and Pacific (Fiji, Hong Kong, Tonga and Western Samoa).
